The Many Ways Cannabis Helps Cancer Patients

GrowWise_Graphics-01Symptoms of cancer are wide-spread and often specific to the area in which the tumour has developed. Approximately 50-95% of all cancer patients experience pain at some point in their illness. For many, this pain remains uncontrolled and many more experience severe nausea, vomiting, and fatigue related to chemotherapy. Medical cannabis therapy offers a variety of therapeutic effects for numerous symptoms, including pain, nausea, vomiting, sleep, and anxiety.

Cannabis and Chemotherapy

Cannabis is a known antiemetic, meaning that it has the ability to help nausea and vomiting that is associated with chemotherapy. In addition, it has a great potential to provide additional pain relief because of its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabis can also stimulate appetite, and preliminary research suggests it may actually contain some untapped cancer fighting agents of its own. Cannabidiol (CBD) is known for its antioxidant effects, which helps to protect DNA from oxidative damage.

CBD and Cancer Patients: Anxiety, Sleep Patterns, and Fatigue

Cannabidiol (CBD) can further help cancer patients normalize their daily routines by helping with anxiety, sleep patterns, and fatigue. CBD is not only known for its antioxidant properties, but also its anxiolytic capabilities. This means that CBD helps to decrease anxiety and regulate emotional responses. Cannabis as a whole plant, containing the full cannabinoid profile, has been shown to help with sedation. Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main sedative ingredient, and helps patients to fall sleep. CBD has also been shown to have energy altering properties, helping those who feel fatigued regain some energy.
